Dear Parents,

I am so excited to tell you about another classroom adventure we have in the new year!  Our class will be sharing what we are learning about each day at school on twitter.  I would love for you to follow us to see what is happening in our room! The goal is that each week a student will be chosen to ‘tweet’ about our day.  We also plan to share pictures of projects, events, and special activities to celebrate the students and their hard work throughout the year. Don’t have twitter? No worry! I will share snips of our tweets on our classroom blog as well!

Many schools and classrooms across the U.S. are using Twitter as a learning tool for students and as a way to showcase the great things that are happening in our schools on a daily basis.  If you would like to see an example of another elementary classroom using Twitter, check out: @TweetingTopDogs or Mrs. Fizel’s class @ThirdGradeCharm. It is also neat to get information about topics we are interested in like NASA, Lego, and see other third grade classrooms.

Our Twitter account is private right now, so you will need to request to follow us.  Once we get the hang of things we will open up the account.  We have been discussing social media and the importance of making smart and safe choices while online.  We will not be sharing any personal information about ourselves. These are also great topics you can discuss with your child at home.  Again, we hope you will follow us on this new adventure to share our learning! As always, you are welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely, Mrs. Smith

Flexible Seating

Through research and discussion with other teachers near and far I made a decision at the beginning of the year that students needed the opportunity to work how they learn best. Through Donors Choose I was able to get four stand up desks, which was step one. After using and implementing the four stand up desks I have now implemented step two, more flexible seating. Students can now come in the classroom in the morning, pick up their pencil can and choose a spot that will allow them to work at their best today. They may chose from a stand up desk, Wobble chair at a table, bean bag chair and short table, bean bag chair and clipboard, rocking chair, comfy chair, or the rug with a clipboard. Wherever they chose, they should chose a spot that they can do their best learning at. As adults many of us would rather work at a stand up desk, in a comfy office chair, or quite possibly even the couch. I no longer want to expect my students to have to sit in a hard chair, if that is not how they want to learn. With this new classroom environment there are new things that we are learning, but after day one of flexible seating, I believe already that this is what is best for our classroom. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. You are always welcome to stop in and volunteer for an afternoon too and see what it is all about. If you want more information on our Donors Choose page, head to www.donorschoose.org/mrssmith121, I currently have a project for some odds and ends for our classroom, including lap desks for flexible seating. PS: If anyone has some fun chairs that they'd be willing to donate to our classroom for the rest of the year, let me know. We're happy to have more options!

Henry's Freedom Box

This week we are reading Henry's Freedom Box. It is about a slave that mailed himself to freedom. Henry was in a box for 27 hours. The box was 3 feet, by 2 feet, by 2 feet. Under my desk is about that size. Students were given the opportunity to test it out. Since they are not adults, we needed a few adults to also test it out. Mr. Stordahl and myself went ahead. It was a very tight fit. I would not have liked to stay in there for as long as he did. We have learned that Henry's was very brave and courageous. He was also a very smart man. Feel free to ask your child more details about the story.

Pickles are Perfect Every Day

Today my husband kindly brought our class pickles on a stick for no reason. It was a wonderful random act of kindness. I love pickles no matter what day it is! Everyone was happy to pose for a pickle picture!
